United Arab Emirates: Itinerary Planning Guide
The United Arab Emirates — and Dubai in particular — represents one of the 21st century's most dramatic feats of urban ambition: a city built on sand in 50 years that now hosts the world's tallest building, the world's largest mall, and a tourism industry that draws 20 million visitors annually. The spectacle is genuinely impressive even for those sceptical of it. The Burj Khalifa at dusk, the Palm Jumeirah from the air, and the Dubai Frame are architectural statements that work on their own terms. Beyond Dubai's modernity, Abu Dhabi — the capital — has the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (one of the world's most beautiful Islamic buildings), the Louvre Abu Dhabi (a genuine art museum, not just a branding exercise), and the Formula 1 circuit on Yas Island. The older emirate of Sharjah preserves more of the Gulf's traditional architecture and has the UAE's best cultural institutions. Travel advisory: Homosexuality is criminalised in the UAE, and public displays of affection can result in detention regardless of relationship status. Alcohol is available in licensed venues (hotels, restaurants) but not in public. Modest dress is required in malls, markets, and non-resort public areas. The country is safe and has excellent infrastructure, but social codes require awareness.
