Suwon is a major city just 30 kilometers south of Seoul that is most famous for its extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage fortification, the Hwaseong Fortress — one of the finest examples of late Joseon Dynasty military architecture and the most well-preserved fortress complex in Korea. Built over two and a half years between 1794 and 1796 under the orders of King Jeongjo, who wanted to create a new ideal city at Suwon as a tribute to his father and potentially relocate the capital, the fortress stretches for nearly 6 kilometers around the old city center, incorporating watchtowers, command posts, garrison quarters, and four impressive gates that still define the city's historic core. Walking the complete circuit of the Hwaseong Fortress walls is among the most rewarding heritage walks in South Korea — an experience that combines panoramic views over both the old town and modern Suwon, an intimate encounter with Joseon-era military engineering, and a sense of completeness that few other historic sites in Korea achieve. The wall incorporates 48 individual military structures and was designed with remarkable innovation by the architect Jeong Yak-yong, who used a pulley system he invented to move the massive stones. The Hwaseong Haenggung, the palace within the fortress walls where the king resided during visits, can be toured separately and occasionally hosts traditional military re-enactment performances in costume. Beyond the fortress, Suwon offers a cluster of attractions that make it worth a full day trip or overnight stay from Seoul. The Suwon Hwaseong Museum provides excellent historical context for the fortress and its construction through well-organized exhibits and a working scale model. The traditional Haengi market, one of the oldest markets in the Suwon area, adds local color and the chance to sample Suwon galbi — a distinctive style of grilled short rib that the city is famous for throughout Korea and considers its signature culinary contribution to Korean cuisine. Suwon is connected to Seoul by frequent metro services on Line 1 and the Bundang Line, making it one of the most accessible day trips from the capital. The fortress and surrounding old town are entirely walkable from the train station, and the combination of exceptional historical architecture with easy accessibility makes Suwon one of the best half-day or full-day excursions available to travelers based in Seoul.
