Morocco: Itinerary Planning Guide

Morocco is the most accessible introduction to North Africa and the Arab world for Western travellers — close enough to fly from Europe in 3 hours, yet genuinely different in culture, architecture, food, and sensory character from anything in Europe. The imperial cities (Marrakech, Fès, Meknes, Rabat) were built over centuries of Islamic scholarship, trade, and artistic achievement; the Sahara Desert reaches their southern edge; the High Atlas Mountains rise between coast and desert. Marrakech's medina — a UNESCO-listed labyrinth of souks, riads, hammams, and mosques built around the Djemaa el-Fna square — is one of the world's great urban experiences. The square transforms nightly into a theatre of food stalls, acrobats, storytellers, and snake charmers. Fès's medieval medina (Fès el-Bali) is even more authentically preserved — and even more disorienting to navigate. Moroccan food is one of the world's great cuisines — tagine, couscous, bastilla, harira, and fresh mint tea are all more complex and rewarding than their international versions suggest. The country's geographical range (Atlantic coast, Mediterranean coast, Sahara desert, High Atlas) makes it possible to surf in Essaouira, hike Atlas trails, and sleep in a Sahara tent on a single trip.
