Hong Kong: Itinerary Planning Guide
Hong Kong is one of the world's most vertical and intense cities — a dense, efficient metropolis of 7.5 million people packed onto a harbour between dramatic mountains and one of the busiest shipping lanes on earth. Its skyline, viewed from Kowloon across Victoria Harbour, is one of the most spectacular urban panoramas in the world. The Peak at dusk, the neon of Mong Kok, the night markets of Temple Street, and the dim sum trolleys of Sunday morning — Hong Kong operates at full intensity around the clock. The city is a living collision of British colonial legacy and Cantonese Chinese culture, with a food scene that ranges from $2 wonton noodles at a dai pai dong to some of Asia's most sophisticated fine dining. Cantonese dim sum, roast goose, milk tea, egg tarts, and claypot rice are all essential eating. The wet markets of Sham Shui Po and the dai pai dongs of Wan Chai are the antidote to the gleaming mall culture of Central. Note: Hong Kong's political situation has changed significantly since the 2019 protests and the subsequent National Security Law. Western governments (US, UK, Australia, Canada) have issued Level 2 advisories noting potential legal risks under the law. Most tourist activities remain unaffected, but travellers should review current advisories.
