Croatia: Itinerary Planning Guide

Croatia has one of the most diverse coastlines in Europe — 1,800km of Adriatic shore, 1,244 islands, medieval walled cities, and Dalmatian villages where people have been fishing the same waters for two thousand years. It joined the EU in 2013 and adopted the euro in 2023, making logistics simpler; but prices have risen sharply in the last decade and it is no longer the bargain it once was, particularly in Dubrovnik and Hvar in summer. Dubrovnik is Croatia's most celebrated city — a 13th-century walled city of white limestone and orange-tiled roofs perched on the Adriatic, connected to Venice and the Ottoman Empire by centuries of trading history. The Game of Thrones filming location recognition brought new global awareness; it also brought summer crowds that strain the old city's infrastructure. Visit outside July–August for a dramatically different experience. Beyond Dubrovnik, Croatia's interior is largely overlooked. The Plitvice Lakes National Park (cascading turquoise lakes connected by wooden boardwalks through forest) is one of Europe's most beautiful natural areas. Istria's hilltop towns, olive oil, and truffles share more with Italy than the Dalmatian coast; Zagreb's Habsburg old town and contemporary café culture are an underappreciated surprise.
