Liberia: Travel Itinerary & Planning Guide

Liberia is the capital of Guanacaste Province and the primary gateway to Costa Rica's Pacific dry forest and beach corridor. Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport, 12 kilometres west of the city, receives direct international flights from the United States and Canada — making Liberia the point of entry for hundreds of thousands of travellers who come for the Guanacaste beaches, national parks, and dry forest reserves without ever needing to transit through San José. The city itself, known historically as the 'White City' for its whitewashed colonial architecture and the white limestone used in older buildings, is more transit hub than destination — though the restored Gobernación building, the local market, and the old neighbourhood around the main plaza offer a genuine sense of the Guanacaste identity that the beach towns lack.
