Argentina: Itinerary Planning Guide

Argentina occupies the southern cone of South America, stretching from subtropical jungles in the north to the wind-scoured plains of Patagonia. The country spans six distinct climate zones, meaning a single trip can move from jungle to glacier, desert to vineyard, in hours by domestic flight. Buenos Aires anchors most itineraries — a cosmopolitan capital with European architecture, a ferocious food scene, and tango born in its working-class neighborhoods in the late 19th century. Beyond the capital, Argentina's appeal lies in its geographic and cultural contrasts. Mendoza produces Malbec at 750-meter elevation and pairs it with some of the finest restaurants in South America. Iguazu Falls, shared with Brazil, delivers one of the most kinetic natural spectacles on earth, comprising 275 individual cataracts. Patagonia draws serious trekkers to Torres del Paine and Los Glaciares, where the Perito Moreno Glacier calves directly into Lago Argentino. Argentina rewards longer stays. The country is physically enormous and distances between regions require domestic flights or overnight buses. First-time visitors tend to anchor in Buenos Aires and add one or two regions. Return visitors often dedicate entire trips to Patagonia or the Andean northwest around Salta and Jujuy, where colonial towns and polychrome landscapes are largely free of mass tourism.
